I was sorry to read today on The Trad that Peter Kaplan had passed away. He was best known in New York for his stewardship of The New York Observer, but he also more recently worked to relaunch M Magazine and oversee Women’s Wear Daily as director of Fairchild Fashion Media.
Peter emailed me out of the blue a year or two ago and asked if I had time for a meeting with him the next time I was in New York. He offered me a gig on the spot. Turns out he was the rare fan of both my work on NPR and here at Put This On. When I came up with a pitch for him, I dropped him a line and didn’t hear back. I assumed he’d moved on to other things, but it turns out he was diagnosed with cancer not long after our meeting. I’m certainly grateful for the only time in my career anyone’s ever tried to talk me into taking a job.
You can read more about Peter and his career here in his Times obituary (from which I’ve cribbed the photo above). Here’s a beautiful remembrance in New York.
