It’s On Sale: Edward Green Shoes

Edward Green is my favorite shoe brand, but they are very expensive. At Brooks Brothers, for example, they go for about $1,300-1,500 a pair. Are they worth it? Well, they won’t last you any longer than the ~$250-350 shoes you might buy from Allen Edmonds, Paul Evans, or Meermin, but they do look very, very beautiful. They use great materials and have exceptionally nice finishing techniques. What that effectively means is: the interior will feel slightly nicer, and the uppers will be colored in a way that gives them some visual depth.

Unfortunately, they’re rarely discounted, which makes Ashton Marks’ sale on them notable. Included is a very useful black cap toe (in two widths), some brown wingtips, and a couple of loafers. Shipping is free, and with the discount, you’re looking at about $750 a pair. Not cheap, but about half the price of what they go for in the US.

If you haven’t ordered Edward Greens before, know that the general rule of thumb is to go a half size down from your Brannock size. That is, if you normally wear a 10D, then you’re probably a 9.5 in most of Edward Green’s shoes. The only exception is maybe the 888 last, which is tighter at the toe box, so some people take their regular US size.

It’s on Sale: Brooks Brothers Black Fleece

Brooks Brothers’ Thom Browne-designed Black Fleece line is on flash sale. Discounts vary but some are quite deep. Black Fleece’s house style is sort of trad caricature, and its narrow lapels and cropped cuts seem to be aging quickly right now, but these remain very, very nice clothes. Button-down oxfords at around $60 (from $200) and at least one suit at under $300 are highlights to me. Ties are quite nice, too; unfortunately, I didn’t see any of Black Fleece’s excellent dress shoes.

It’s On Sale: Nigel Cabourn at Marrkt

Derek and I are both enamored of the British menswear designer Nigel Cabourn, whose work tweaks archival military and expedition clothes in just-right ways, making a sort of Platonic ideal of classic streetwear.

Cabourn’s rarely on sale, but the English flash sale site Marrkt is currently offering a selection of items, along with some stuff from Highland 2000 and Edwin Vintage. Lots of beautiful outerwear for those of you who need coats for the fall and winter cold.

As usual, the site is by invitation, and if you’d like to use ours, we get a kickback.

It’s on Sale: Levi’s Vintage Clothing on Vente Privee
Vente Privee is just playing the hits these days and brings back LVC for a flash sale this morning. VP’s LVC sale includes both their reproduction denim cuts (LVC’s repros are some of the best out there) as well as leather jackets and other clothing at significant discount (I bought my Menlo leather from a previous VP sale). If you haven’t joined VP yet, feel free to use our link.

It’s On Sale: Wolverine 1000 Mile at Vente Privee
Vente-Privee continues to kill the flash sale game with a sale on Wolverine’s high-end 1000 Mile line. Discounts are typically excellent at the site - the sale just opened, so give it a look. As usual, if you haven’t signed up for an account, consider using our invitation so we get the kickback.

It’s on Sale: Anniversary Sale at Neighbour

Vancouver’s Neighbour (that “u” lets you know it’s Vancouver, British Columbia) is having a sale to celebrate its third anniversary. Nearly all their stock is 20% off, including a lot of spring/summer and staple items. Basic shipping to the U.S. is a flat $15, which is better than you get from many U.S. stores. The sale includes Unis’s popular, slim chinos, Our Legacy dad-wash jeans, Patrik Ervell’s architectural normcore, Neighbour’s own Scotland-made shaggy shetland sweaters, Shuron sunglasses, and Porter accessories, as well as other good stuff like Bresciani socks and Frank Leder’s interesting, Deutsch take on folkwear. Sale ends April 13, and sales are final.

It’s On Sale: Barbour Bedale
Nordstrom has the Barbour Bedale jacket on sale for 33% off, putting it at $254. Not cheap, but it’s an incredibly useful and versatile jacket. Get a matching waxed cotton hood and you can have yourself a rain jacket as well.
I recommend sizing down if you buy one. True-to-size is cut more for wear over a tailored jacket, but the Bedale is a bit too short to really wear over a sport coat. You might also want to budget $50 or so for alternations, as this model is notorious for having short sleeves. You can have them lengthened pretty easily by bringing the jacket to any Orvis store, or by sending it to Barbour themselves.

It’s On Sale: (Almost) Everything at Bench & Loom

Bench & Loom is having an early spring cleaning. All full-priced items (except grooming products) are available at 40% off with the discount code SPRING40.

The most amazing item in stock might be this Chapal A1, although even with the discount, the jacket is pretty expensive. A bit more affordable is this rubberized Mackintosh raincoat (which is usually hard to find on sale) and this waxed Filson jacket. There are also some nice shirts available, such as this Levis Vintage Clothing chambray and this Five Brother flannel. I own the same flannel and wrote about it a few weeks ago. Note that the sizing runs really slim on Five Brother. I’m a size 36 chest, and the small is still pretty slim on me.

All sales are final and the sale ends April 2nd.

It’s On Sale: Footwear at Urban Outfitters

I have a long-standing teenage grudge against Urban Outfitters, but why let integrity and principle get in the way of a 25% discount? All footwear at UO is on sale right now, making a lot of classic casual shoes like Clark’s Wallabees or Red Wing boots one-fourth more affordable, and  unimpeachable summer sneakers like Vans Authentics downright cheap. If you download their app, you also get free shipping.
