Every year, StyleForum holds a charity auction. It’s one of the forum’s longest-running traditions, and forum owner Fok Leung says it’s the one he’s most proud of. Over the last ten years, they’ve raised over $85,000 for charities — this year puts them on schedule to break the $100k mark. In the past, the money has gone to the Ronald McDonald House, an organization that feeds and houses families of children who have to travel for medical treatment. This year, the money is going towards the ALS Association, an American non-profit that provides care to those who have ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). The ALS Association also funds research to find a cure for this neurogenerative disease that affects a person’s ability to eat, speak, move, and eventually breathe.
If you, like me, occasionally feel guilty for the amount of money you spend on clothes, this is an excellent time to acquire some lovely items while feeling better about your spending. All of the proceeds collected go towards StyleForum’s charity of choice — they keep not a single penny — so you know you’re supporting a good cause. Additionally, the items auctioned are always of exceptional quality. At the moment, they’re auctioning off a chunky shawl collar cardigan made from pure camelhair, a noble fiber on par with cashmere. This lux cardigan would make for a great holiday gift for anyone in your life. Vendors donating to this year’s charity auction include No Man Walks Alone, Carmina, Kent Wang, Satoriale, and Sam Hober, among many others.
The auction schedule is quick-paced. Every day, a new item is put on the auction block, and members have 24 hours to bid. Fok says this is a way to keep members engaged and the conversation moving. As an incentive, everyone who wins an auction at the end gets a rubber bracelet that says “StyleForum Approved” (a tongue-in-cheek phrase on the forum). The top three people who bid over retail will also get a Good Art rosette on their bracelet worth $125.
